Portugal Physician Observation

A group of Honors students pose in their white coats in Portugal.

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION

Program Leader: Ulluminair Salim

The two-week Portugal Physician Observation program offers Judy Genshaft Honors College students a unique opportunity to accompany physicians at one of Lisbon's public hospitals. Students will gain exposure to the cultural and economic complexities of the hospital, the National Health System and immerse themselves in the vibrant life of Lisbon.

Portuguese hospitals provide aspiring health care practitioners with an uncommon experience — from watching a heart surgeon perform a long-awaited procedure to observing the implantation of a functional prosthetic eye, the removal of a brain tumor, or the use of cutting-edge technologies in the operating room alongside their inventors. Sometimes, however, the work of the day is to simply wait and hold space — while physicians conduct patient intake interviews, complete paperwork, or prepare for surgery.

During the program, students will have the opportunity to get to know their preceptors as they journey alongside them. This model allows students to learn about their financial and familial sacrifices, emotional and psychological challenges, and unwavering dedication to serving patients.

Pre-health students in the Judy Genshaft Honors College with an interest in global health and intercultural health care will benefit from this program.

Program Structure

The two-week program begins with student arrival on Saturday and a group welcome lunch on Sunday, allowing time to settle in before clinical activities begin.

Week 1: Clinical Rotation and Excursion

From Monday to Thursday, students will spend at least five hours per day shadowing physicians in a designated specialty. On Friday, the group will participate in a full-day cultural excursion to one of Lisbon’s historical or scenic landmarks. This week also includes two group dinners for shared reflection and connection. On Saturday and Sunday, students will enjoy free time and have planned their own adventures during past programs — such as kayaking in the Algarve or exploring other regions of Portugal.

Week 2: New Rotation and Exploration

Students will switch specialties for the second week, continuing clinical shadowing from Monday to Thursday. This week also includes two group dinners, providing additional opportunities for reflection, connection, and cultural exchange. The program concludes with departures on Friday of the second week.

HONORS REQUIREMENTS

Please note that the Portugal study abroad program satisfies an experiential learning activity in the Global Experience category for completing the Judy Genshaft Honors College curriculum. However, the associated internship course will not satisfy an Honors core course toward the academic completion requirements.

Students will meet twice a month during the spring semester preceding the trip on Wednesdays from 5 - 7 p.m. to fulfill the internship credit.
